Victorian government helps women leaders excel on sports boards

Victorian Community Sports Minister Ros Spence opened the state government’s expanded Change Our Game Women in Governance program with the curriculum to create more opportunities for women to achieve their leadership goals. in the sports industry.

The Office for Women in Sport and Recreation has partnered with the Australian Institute of Company Directors to deliver the three-day program, which provides a comprehensive overview of the main components of leadership including governance, strategy, risk and finances.

Minister Spence notes that “this initiative is crucial to empower women and strengthen their representation in leadership positions in active sports and recreation organizations.”

The initiative follows a successful pilot project last year that saw 25 women graduate and many of them subsequently take on leadership and leadership roles within the sector, including Michelle Harris, newly appointed to the Board of Directors of Swimming Victoria.

With over 20 years of experience as a professional in the sports sector and a long history of volunteering in community sport, Harris was keen to take the next step and was appointed by GippSport to participate in the pilot and complete the course. direction.

Harris said that “the course was a great reminder that there are amazing women who know and understand the responsibilities of governance, and together we can take the next step to important positions on the board. of our sector ”.

The program helps women working and volunteering in the sport and recreation sector who are new or aspiring directors to acquire the knowledge, skills and ability to excel in board positions at regional levels, state and national.

Two parts of the program are available. The first stream will provide training to up to 25 women who currently serve on a board of directors, while the second stream will provide training to up to 25 women who have been identified as, or aspire to be, future members. from the administration board.
