BALDWINSVILLE – Whether you enjoy gardening or just hanging out with friends, the Canton Woods Senior Center offers a wide range of programs. Get a fresh start this spring — stop by the center to try something new.

Things to do

be a part of Canton Woodland Garden come back to life! Bert Mead will meet all seniors interested in helping with the centre’s garden. Join Bert for a planning meeting for the 2022 planting season. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 20 at 10:30 a.m.

Looking for something to do on rainy spring days? We have a lot of puzzles to take home and enjoy. They are located just inside the main entrance.

bunco returns to Canton Woods at 10 a.m. Friday, April 22. This is a fun and fast dice game. Try.

Reading Club meets at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26. The current book is “The Razor’s Edge” by W. Somerset Maugham. Start reading and join the lively discussion.

PEACE lunch

Canton Woods serves PEACE, Inc. senior nutrition hot lunch in the fully immunized dining room at noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You will be asked to show proof of vaccination. Please plan to arrive between 11:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.

Takeout is also available for those who are unvaccinated or prefer not to dine in. Please plan to come by car between 11:15 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.

You must make a reservation for both dinner programs. Call 315-638-4536 to reserve your lunch.

Services for seniors

Free legal services are available at Canton Woods several Tuesdays throughout the year. The next session is from noon to 3:30 p.m. on May 10. Call the center at 315-638-4536 to make an appointment. You must be an Onondaga County resident and at least 60 years of age to participate in this program.

Nadine Kerr, a family and consumer science teacher at Baldwinsville, offers Smartphone, iPad, Tablet or Laptop Support. If you need help figuring out how to use the calendar, send email, or go online, she’s also very knowledgeable about Apple devices. Bring your devices and your questions (it’s a good idea to write them down). Unfortunately, Nadine can’t help with a Tracfone. Nadine will be in Canton Woods from 2:45 p.m. to 3:55 p.m. on Monday, May 9. Please call the center in advance to make an appointment.

Well-being and fitness

Canton Woods can help you stay fit with one of these fun fitness classes.

tai chi (Short form Yang) Classes are at 8 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A fee is to be paid to the monitor.

Aerobics for seniors takes place at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A fee is to be paid to the monitor.

Free Fall prevention classes take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Kripalu “Optional Chair” Yoga, led by Yvonne Martin, certified teacher of Kripalu Yoga, takes place on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. The instructor accepts donations.

line dance is an easy, fun and great exercise for your body and brain. This class is for beginner line dancers. No experience is necessary. Instructor Eileen Corlett, who has over 30 years of experience teaching dance to children and adults, will explain and teach basic line dancing steps in detail. Line dances for beginners will be done to a wide genre of music (country, oldies, pop, latin and more). So put on your dancing shoes and have fun! Classes take place from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursdays. A fee is to be paid to the monitor.

If you haven’t checked out our new senior cardio ball kick class, now is your chance! This is a low impact exercise class using music, a large exercise ball and sticks to move to the beat. Arlette Folckemer gives free lessons at 9:30 a.m. on Fridays. Attendance is limited to 12 people, so call 315-638-4536 to reserve your spot.

bottle and can drive

Your nickels will add up to help your senior center. There are now two ways to contribute.

The Canton Woods Board of Directors and Seniors Activity Committee have an ongoing bottle and can collection program. All bottles or cans placed in the center’s bottle and can collection boxes are returned for deposit. The funds flow to you through your senior activity committee.

In addition to the collection program at the center, you and your family members can return bottles and cans to McBride’s Bottle and Can Return, 80 Smokey Hollow Road. Let the clerk know that you are donating your statements to the Canton Woods Senior Center. They will credit the amount to our account.
