Gastritis is a condition in which the inner lining of the stomach becomes inflamed. The protective layer of the stomach called the mucosa protects the stomach from acids and other bacterial components. This layer ignites when something damages or weakens it. A type of bacteria called Helicobacter pylori is the most common bacterial cause of gastritis.
Gastritis can be of different types:
Erosive gastritis: This causes both inflammation and erosion of the stomach lining. This condition is also known as reactive gastritis.
Non-erosive gastritis: Inflammation of the stomach lining without erosion or damage to the stomach lining.
Causes of gastritis:
The main cause of gastritis is damage to the mucous layer of the stomach. There could be several factors that cause damage to the inner layer eventually causing gastritis.
- Excessive consumption of alcohol

- Bile reflux: Bile is a digestive fluid that is released by the liver to aid in digestion. Bile reflux is a situation where fluid returns to the liver instead of the small intestine, thus causing gastritis.
