Men’s wrestling wins four wins over Ursinus
JERSEY CITY, NJ – The University of New Jersey City men’s wrestling team fell to the Ursinus College Bears on Saturday night, Nov. 20 at the John J. Moore Athletic and Fitness Center (JMAC) in a traditional double-scoring match. from 26-12. The Gothic Knights had four different wrestlers who recorded individual wins in loss, including junior Jeff Johnson (Middlesex, NJ / Middlesex) and senior Kyle Hillermeier (Howell, NJ / Canton Freehold), who recorded their first victories of the 2021-22 season.
After a loss in the first game at 157 pounds for the Knights (0-4), Johnson managed to put the team on the board with a win at 165 pounds. Johnson defeated Noah Supsic of Ursinus (1-0 by an 8-1 decision to claim his first victory of the year.
The Greens and Gold kept the pressure on following Johnson’s victory as a compatriot junior Matthew Armamento (Kenilworth, NJ / Roselle Park) recorded his fourth victory in the 174-pound category with an impressive 8-2 decision. It was the fourth victory of the year for the co-captain and forced a tie between the Bears and NJCU.
Hillermeier managed to raise his hand after the game after beating Kyle Schaffer of Ursinus by a 12-6 decision. The Gothic Knights co-captain sealed victory in the 197-pound weight class and kept the NJCU close at hand for a comeback.
In arguably the match of the night, freshman Andre Ruiz (Little Ferry, NJ / Ridgefield Park) recorded a 5-4 decision win after a back-and-forth battle between him and Romeo Rodriguez. The second fought until the last second of the game, before sealing the victory at 133 pounds with a driving time advantage. Ruiz now leads the Gothic Knights with five wins this season.
The team will return to the mat on Saturday, December 4 for the Blue Jay Classic, hosted by Elizabethtown College, in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania.
