PALO PINTO – A door opened in front of the Palo Pinto County courthouse on Wednesday on a fitness tool that less than 8% of counties in Texas can claim.

It was dedicated to the memory of a woman who motivated her colleagues in the county to strive for a healthy lifestyle.

“She challenged us all to do better, to be better and to live better,” Deanna Copeland said of Iris Ann Stagner, who was one of the first County Wellness Coordinators. state and spent four of her 20+ years as a Palo Pinto County employee. guide employees in getting in shape as part of the Texas Association of Counties’ Healthy County Wellness Program.

Stagner was fatally struck by a truck in 2012, but about 50 county employees celebrated her memory on Wednesday as family members cut the ribbon at the Palo Pinto County Employee Fitness Center.

The “Ghost Bicycle” commemorates the spot where Iris Stagner was fatally struck by a vehicle while cycling on the American Bridge 180 over the Brazos River.

“Today would have been her 64th birthday,” said Copeland, who is the deputy county welfare coordinator and was “very close” to Stagner and her husband, Butch. “She would like Palo Pinto County to continue to encourage its employees to be in good health.”

Members of Stagner’s family came from Mineral Wells to cut the ceremonial ribbon in the center.

“She would have loved it,” said her daughter, Felicia Harvey. “It’s great that after nine years, they still honor him. “

A Dream of Stagnant, the fitness center is funded by the TAC Wellness Program, which financially rewards participating counties when employees meet certain health criteria like weight loss or secession from smoking.

The Palo Pinto center is open to county employees only, who have 24/7 access.

“Because we have jailers who work nights,” Wellness Coordinator Angela Bryant said.

An inscription on the door dedicates the fitness center to Stagner’s memory. The Texas County Association also annually selects a County Wellness Coordinator for its Iris Stagner Award.

“And I hope the county workers honor her and try to be healthier and use this equipment, which Iris wanted,” Copeland said.
