How Staten Islanders Can Apply For 5 Training Programs That Lead To Healthcare Jobs
STATEN ISLAND, NY – Those interested in pursuing or finding a career in healthcare can take one of the Staten Island Performing Provider System’s (SI PPS) new apprenticeship programs that will help fill the staffing gap healthcare in Staten Island.
Interested persons can apply on the SI PPS website, StatenIslandPPS.org/careers/, and complete the form at the bottom of the page.
Eligible applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, be able to work in the United States, and be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Programs include Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Community Health Worker (CHW), Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA), Certified Home Health Aide (HHA), and Certified Home Health Aide (HHA) program. help from the community health worker (CHW).
The programs are a mix of classroom and on-the-job learning. Students who have previously completed community health worker certified peer recovery promotion courses or certified nursing assistant courses can further their education through hands-on learning experience.
Below are the programs and descriptions of each.
Certified Assistant Nurse (AIIC)
This position is for someone who can provide direct patient care whether in a hospital, nursing home or home care setting.
- Ensure the activities of daily living by helping to serve meals, feeding patients if necessary; patient positioning; provide water and food between meals
- Maintain patient stability by checking vital signs and weight
- Ensure patient comfort using resources and materials; transporting sick people; respond to call lights and patient requests
- Must document actions by completing forms, reports, logs and records
Community health worker (CHW)
- Helping individuals, families, groups and communities to develop their capacity and access to resources for health services, food, shelter, quality care and health information
- Must be able to facilitate client communication and empowerment with health care/social service systems
- Helping to help health care and social service systems become culturally relevant and responsive to their service population
- Help people understand their health status and develop strategies to improve their health
- Provide health information using culturally appropriate terms and concepts; provide informal advice, support and follow-up
- Provide health services, such as monitoring blood pressure and providing first aid
- Make home visits to patients with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, and those at high risk of health problems, including the elderly
Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA)
Certified Recovery Peer Advocates engage and provide peer support to people with addictions, mental health issues, and at-risk youth. RCAPs serve as role models by promoting well-being and independence.
- Provides peer support to behavioral health consumers, including referral to programs, service providers, and community resources
- Conducts outreach to members who miss appointments to build engagement
- Assist members in carrying out the tasks defined in their treatment plans
- Attends and participates in various appointments/meetings to support and advocate for members
- Report members’ progress against the community-based experience to clinical team members and may escalate appropriate questions and issues to clinical and non-clinical team members
- May travel to members’ homes to provide peer-level support as needed
Community Health Worker (CHW) Support Program
Eligibility and requirements include:
- People between the ages of 17 and 21 in Staten Island can apply for the program
- Participants must complete and pass a 4-hour virtual course with an 80% or higher.
- Participants will complete an internship with community organizations in Staten Island. The internship is paid for 10 weeks, 20 hours per week, at $15 per hour.
- Those who graduate from the program will be eligible for a full scholarship from the College of Staten Island Community Health Worker Certificate Program
Certified Home Health Aide (HHA)
The full-time, 5-week program will teach individuals everything they need and prepare them to become a New York State Certified Home Health Aide. Although the submission form for the fall is closed, future opportunities will open.
- Assist clients with daily personal tasks, such as bathing or dressing
- Perform household chores such as laundry, washing dishes and vacuuming
- Help organize the client’s schedule and schedule appointments
- Arrange transportation to medical offices or other outings
- Shop and prepare meals to meet a customer’s dietary specifications
- Keep customers engaged in their social networks and communities
In 2021, the SI PPS and participating partners trained 95 community health workers and certified peer recovery advocates, 25 certified care aides and 10 home health aides, he said.
