Faith and Fitness Based Maui Startup Gets $ 25,000 Best Business Plan Grant

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Maui’s Landa Ampong says being put on leave from her human resources job when the pandemic hit opened her eyes to new opportunities.

“It was definitely a blessing in disguise,” she said.

With free time, wife Lahaina and her husband began to exercise more.

“We were also growing in our faith and maturing, so we wanted to wear strong and bold religious clothes, but we couldn’t really find any,” she said. “That’s when God showed the need right away.

Ampong began to design his own workout clothes – shirts, shorts and sweatshirts emblazoned with Bible verses and positive messages. Then she took a bigger leap of faith.

“In March, we did some beta testing and we exclusively pre-sold to people on our mailing list, who we call our ‘devotees’, just to see if there was even a need,” he said. she declared.

Making sales encouraged Ampong that she was into something.

She started a business called God’s Lanes and enrolled in a business course at the Maui Economic Opportunity Business Development Center.

Earlier this month, BDC director David Daly announced that Ampong had won the organization’s competition for small business start-ups. A panel named its business plan as the best of 30 submissions.

Ampong was stunned.

“Honestly, I didn’t think I would win. I really didn’t think so, ”she said.

Daly said the judges were impressed with his attention to detail.

“His plan was perfect all along. Everything was very detailed, very thought out. It gave the reader and our judges a chance to believe in this business, ”he said.

The grant money will help Ampong develop his new business.

“We are planning to upgrade some of our equipment and create more storage space so that we can hold all future inventory,” she said.

It took over a year to launch his business and it is still a work in progress.

“We are learning who our target audience is and everything is different, men, women, seniors, young people who really like to work out and people who don’t,” she said.

The pandemic forced Ampong to get creative. She says her faith in God did the rest.

“We really wanted to encourage people with our clothes and our brand to move with him. This is our slogan. Move with him in everything you do, ”she said.
