COVID-19: Okanagan Gym plans to defy provincial public health mandates

An Okanagan gymnasium said it would defy provincial government restrictions on fitness facilities.

The province announced Tuesday afternoon that a phased opening of gyms and fitness centers will begin Jan. 20.

“After reviewing the data we have, today I am taking the prudent step of reopening gyms and exercise facilities with capacity limits and continued use of the BC Immunization Card” , said Dr. Bonnie Henry.

Iron Energy Gyms in West Kelowna said today marks the first day of what it calls Operation Green Light.

“Operation Green Light is 100 gyms across BC opening their doors, regardless of tenure,” said Brian Mark, co-owner of Iron Energy Gym.

“Gyms around here have reached out to us saying, ‘We feel the same way.’ We wonder why the gyms are closed and the malls are open? We wondered why you can go to the casino and drink alcohol instead of working on your physical and mental health.“

The gymnasium said that while it has tracked all mandates so far, aside from the last order to close in mid-December, that will no longer be the case.

This goes directly against provincial government medical orders.

“We learned about the important steps to ensure gyms can restart safely while protecting those most at risk,” Dr Henry said.

The co-owners said their gymnasium will remain open and operate at full capacity as they feel it is a necessity for the surrounding community.

“We’re strong for the community, we’re strong for Canada, and we’re strong to be that voice,” said Brett Godin, co-owner of Iron Energy Gym.

The owners also said they would not pay any fines imposed on them and would fight the fines in court.
